Why Less Mess Means Less Stress

Having a clean home goes beyond the expected cleaning chores. It's more than simply washing the dishes or taking out the trash.

It goes past the surface and into your mental and physical well being. It can affect your mood, your focus and happiness.

In fact, a clean home can be healthier for you than a neighborhood's walkability because we spend more time indoors than outdoors.

And because your home is an extension of you and your values, it will reflect back on how you feel. If your home is cluttered and messy, your life may be that way too. A distraction that takes extra energy to focus and get things done while increasing stress levels.

And this isn't just an assumption but it's based on scientific research. Numerous studies prove people are more productive, happier and better focused when their home or office is organized and tidy.

De-clutter sensation Marie Kondo has published two books on the subject. Her recommendation isn't just cleaning up but tidying up with the things that bring us joy and removing everything else that doesn't. This empowers your environment and restores harmony to a once cluttered lifestyle.

So what can we do to remove the mess and bring back the order?

It seems daunting at first, but break it down into small, simple tasks.

  • First get rid of the emotional attachments to objects. Don't let it own you, but own it. Then decide if you actually value it, if it brings you happiness or provides a useful purpose. If not, it goes out with the trash or for donation or on Ebay.
  • Make time to clean. Start small with 10 min increments in small areas to tackle first then bigger areas later, such as your kitchen, garage or closets. First build the discipline to clean then let it grow into bigger tasks.
  • After all the cleaning work is done, it's so easy to slip into bad habits. Make reminders to clean your home. Not all at once, but break it down into mopping and vacuuming one day, bathroom the next and so on, depending on your lifestyle and home size.

So it doesn't have to seem impossible to have a clean, tidy home and get all the benefits that come with it. Get started today and invigorate both your home and your mindset.

And if you can think of any other tips to get rid of the clutter, feel free to let us know in the comments!
